Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically outlines how sexual harassment is against the law. The law protects applies to employers with 15 or more employees, which includes governments at the local and state levels.
There are a few commonly known risk factors that may increase an employee's chance of being assaulted either by a fellow employee or by a non-employee. If an employee works with the public, there is a higher chance they could be assaulted.
If they are exchanging money with the public, there is a higher chance that they could be assaulted. Sometimes people feel that they have been wronged or not given enough money back, and so they react.
There are several key things to know about sexual harassment that are often misunderstood. One of the most commonly misunderstood things is that the harasser and the victim do not have to be of the opposite sex.
Still, however, a person does not need to be the class pet to get in good with upper management. Simply becoming a better employee will handle that.
The harasser also does not have to be just another co-worker working alongside the victim. The harasser could be the victim's manager, supervisor, or even a non-employee.
It is also important to realize and understand that the victim does not have to only be the person directly affected by the harasser's actions. Victims are any persons who are negatively affected by the harasser's behavior.
People who work at night or early in the morning need to be cautious and aware of their surroundings at all times. If there are any suspicious noises or people about, they either need to be on their guard and ready to leave that situation as soon as possible.
Another risk factor is if you happen to work in a high-crime area. High-crime areas can be dangerous for all people, so you should definitely be careful if you happen to working in a high-crime area.
When the victim realizes he or she is being sexually harassed, they should try to contact the harasser and tell them that the contact is unwanted and needs to stop. They should do this in a public area where there are a lot of people.
This does not mean that a person should neglect their home and family life, but it does mean the employee who is trying to become better should strive to remain focused while at work and one way to accomplish that is to know that they will not be just sitting waiting for the clock to read 5:00 pm.
Sexual harassment training is a critical part of every workplace and it should not be taken lightly.
